A

Associate Degree in Science

Program duration: Two years full-time and pro-rata for part-time
Commence: Semester 1 and Semester 2

This program offers an alternative entry pathway to the Bachelor of Science and related degree programs at USC.

It offers those who may have a limited background in science a general introduction to the foundations of a range of science disciplines.  By developing the academic and scientific skills necessary for undergraduate study, you will be able to articulate with confidence into a Bachelor of Science or related program.


Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science

Program duration: Two years full-time and pro-rata for part-time
Commence: Semester 1 and Semester 2

Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science provides you with an understanding of how the human body works and what happens when things go wrong. This program allows you to study in the pre-clinical sciences such as physiology and anatomy, medical microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, molecular biology and clinical chemistry.

Bachelor of Civil Engineering

 

Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: No

Civil engineering students learn how to design, construct, operate, maintain and recycle the physical and natural environments.

This program provides you with a broad foundation in engineering and enabling sciences before specialising in either construction or environment and water. You develop problem solving, teamwork and communication skills; and technical, business management, and scientific environmental knowledge. You are exposed to current engineering professional practice, with emphasis on the creative nature of engineering and the need and ability to work anywhere in the world.

Students in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering may be awarded with Merit Honours. The class of Merit Honours awarded to a student will be dependent on the students Grade Point Average (GPA) and the result achieved in the Engineering Project courses.

 

Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Science

Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

USCs clinical exercise science program provides you with a pathway to become an accredited exercise physiologist. The program is one of only a few in Australia that have been developed to meet the guidelines of the Accredited Exercise Physiologist qualification, as established by the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS).  During this program, you will gain knowledge and understanding of many aspects of exercise and sport science, including specific studies in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, biomechanics, psychology, motor learning, sports nutrition and sports coaching.

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education 
Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education leads to a career in early childhood education in settings such as long day-care centres, kindergartens and the early years of primary school. First-year students focus on the foundations for early childhood teaching practices, with an emphasis on work placements and wider field experience with children aged from birth to three years. Students learn to build on and integrate essential knowledge and teaching practices for each age group, including the kindergarten year. The final year focuses on the transition to the early phase of learning in primary school contexts.

Study contemporary early childhood developmental psychology and early learning theories. Discover education for sustainability and integration of science and educational policy perspectives. Develop a strong focus on building family and community partnerships; and promoting citizenship in the local and global community. Enhance knowledge by embedding Indigenous perspectives, inclusivity and diversity. Examine early years intervention strategies, diagnostic and pedagogical approaches and authentic assessment practice. Learn to immerse children in literacy, numeracy, science education and play-based learning.

 


Bachelor of Education
Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

To train to become a registered teacher, refer to the combined degrees of Bachelor of Education with Bachelor of Arts, Business or Science. The Bachelor of Education does not accredit graduates for teacher registration in Australian States but may be suitable for those undertaking training opportunities, teaching in private industry or education consultancy. It may be considered as a prerequisite program for entering an accredited teacher education program, and also provides professional development opportunities for teachers, training, and educators who are already accredited with a teacher registration authority.


Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)

Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Become a mechanical engineer and qualify for registration with Engineers Australia. 

In partnership with University of Southern Queensland (USQ), this program includes foundation studies in engineering and the sciences, and courses leading to competence in engineering research, engineering design, and operation and management of engineering systems. It offers practical real-world applications of the course materials, and guest lecturers from industry ensure high-level exposure to current engineering professional practice. It also provides the necessary foundation to enter research or coursework-based postgraduate programs.

Studies incorporate many professional skills, such as working in diverse teams, written and oral communication, and managing projects in a sustainable way. Students are encouraged to find suitable vacation work experience to support their studies; and to attend overseas universities to undertake equivalent studies that count towards their program at USC. Students may be awarded with Merit Honours. The class of Merit Honours awarded will be dependent on the students Grade Point Average (GPA) and the result achieved in the Engineering Project courses.

 

Bachelor of Environmental Science

Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: Yes

In the Bachelor of Environmental Science, you will study the interaction between organisms and their environment, both natural and artificial. Courses focus on these natural and human-managed environments, the interactions between them, and the management of the interactions.  On graduating, you will have the scientific-base required to make valid judgements on the preservation and utilisation of Australias natural ecosystems and resources, and will have experience in practical applications of environmental management techniques.  The program is based on the foundation sciences, toolbox courses that provide relevant practical skills, and specialist courses that equip graduates to enter selected fields of environmental management.


Bachelor of Environmental Health Science

Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: Yes

Obtain scientific training to improve the health and wellbeing of people and the environment at a local, national and international level.

This interdisciplinary program prepares you for careers in both the environmental management and public health sectors. It focuses on developing an understanding of the physical environment and its links with human health through courses in basic and applied sciences. You gain an understanding of public health and sustainable development principles, human/environment interactions, environment and public health planning, and approaches used to identify, assess and manage risks from environmental hazards.

Bachelor of Health Promotion

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. Health promotion activities are positive health activities that incorporate personal, social and environmental change aimed at developing healthier living conditions and ways of life.

Bachelor of Nursing Science

This program of study prepares you to be eligible to apply for registration as a nurse in Queensland. The program has a philosophical foundation based on caring and community engagement, a strong foundation in science, and emphasises the integral nature of clinical experience to the development of competence in nursing. Students have the ability to complete a Mental Health major as part of the program.


Bachelor of Nursing Science (Graduate Entry)

Program duration: 2 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

This accelerated program is designed for those who have gained an undergraduate degree (in any discipline) or, through prior study, have met professional competence to apply for registration as a nurse. This program builds upon prior knowledge and skills, and offers you quality learning and practice opportunities through which you can meet your career aspirations. Students have the ability to complete a Mental Health major as part of the program.



Bachelor of Nutrition

Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

The Bachelor of Nutrition has been designed to complement the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (BND) and provides an alternative pathway for those less interested in the clinical practice component of the BND. In the Bachelor of Nutrition you may select from a range of electives including exercise science, work integrated learning, public health, health promotion and nutrition research.


Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics

Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

The Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics focuses on practical applications of the principals of human nutrition to dietary design and management. You will have extensive opportunities to undertake workplace-integrated learning during your degree to put theory into practice.

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy

This new and innovative occupational therapy program uses courses in professional practice, as well as courses from biomedical science, exercise science, nursing, health promotion, professional practice and management. The program also offers extensive clinical experience.

Bachelor of Paramedic Science

Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: No

The Bachelor of Paramedic Science prepares you for employment as a qualified Advanced Care Paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), along with other Australian state and territory ambulance services. This unique program has a srtong foundational year in clinical and paramedic sciences and promotes a solid foundation for paramedics to develop a grounded set of professional skills for practice.

Bachelor of Primary Education 
Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

The Bachelor of Primary Education focuses on effective teaching strategies in science, literacy and numeracy in primary education.

This program brings together the theory and practice of teaching in primary school settings (PrepYear 7). You develop global perspectives on curriculum and an understanding of the characteristics of diverse learners in today's classrooms. Curriculum knowledge is developed in English, mathematics, science and technology, the arts, health, physical education, and studies of society and environment. You undertake one school placement each year, and two placements in the final year.

Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science develops skills applicable to many areas of employment and provides you with a general education on which to build a lifetime career.

In this program you gain a strong grounding in generic science, while having the flexibility to design a degree to suit your needs. You choose courses from within the Faculty of Science, Health and Education, or incorporate multi-disciplinary studies from the faculties of Business or Arts and Social Sciences. You take common first-year courses in foundation science including biology, chemistry, environment and health, biodiversity, research design and data analysis, and physics. Advanced-level studies can include courses from any of the majors/minors offered by the faculty.

 

Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science

Program duration: 3 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: Yes

Sport and exercise scientists focus on enhancing health and sporting achievements by developing coaching and training programs.

In this program you learn the theory and application of sciences that underpin human movement and performance. You gain in-depth knowledge of the exercise sciences including exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, sports psychology, sports medicine, sports nutrition, and sports coaching and performance analysis. You can complete appropriate courses and obtain sports trainer accreditation or Australian Sports Commission certification. Several first aid qualifications are incorporated throughout the degree.


Bachelor of Science (Honours)

Program duration: 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time

The honours degree offers you the opportunity to continue you undergraduate studies at a higher level, specialising in your area of interest. Completing an honours degree develops your ability to design and complete a research project relatively independently within a given time frame.

University of the Sunshine Coast & TAFE Articulation Programs

Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Operations/ Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Program duration: 3.5 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

In this dual degree, you undertake initial study at TAFE Queensland (SBIT campus in Brisbane) and complete the degree at USC.

In this program you develop your laboratory career by obtaining fundamental technical laboratory skills and scientific knowledge. You learn a range of laboratory technologies including sampling and laboratory testing procedures. The bachelor component provides a theoretical and research focus in biomedical science.

 

Diploma of Fitness / Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science

Program duration: 4 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: No

In this dual degree, you undertake initial study at TAFE Queensland (Mooloolaba campus) and complete the degree at USC.

In this program you gain skills and knowledge to assist people who are considered to be moderately at risk when exercising. Areas of study include: postural appraisal and corrective exercise; the prevention and management of exercise related injuries; obesity and body composition management; and exercise strategies for individuals with disability, musculo-skeletal conditions, cardio-respiratory needs, metabolic disorders, or neurological impairments. You may undertake certificate-level study in the first year; contact the relevant institute for details. The bachelor component provides a theoretical and research focus. 


Diploma of Nursing Care (Enrolled / Division 2 Nursing) / Bachelor of Nursing Science

Program duration: 3.5 Years full-time, or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: No

On successful completion of your diploma at the Southbank Institute of Technology you may enrol in the Bachelor of Nursing Science with eight courses of advanced standing. The diploma is designed to prepare individuals for employment as Enrolled Nurses (first-level nurses who practice in all areas of clinical nursing under the supervision of Registered Nurses). The Bachelor of Nursing Science prepares you to be eligible to apply for registration as a nurse in Queensland.
 

 

Combined or inter-faculty programs, offer you the opportunity to obtain skills in two different but complementary areas, broadening your career opportunities and earning two degrees in a shorter period of time than if you were to study the programs separately.

This combined program enables you to undertake studies in Arts, Social Sciences, and Science. In this degree you can develop a wide skill base by combining complementary specialisations such as community work and public health, environment and heritage and environmental science and more.

Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Health (Human Services and Health Promotion)

Program duration: 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time

Commence mid-year: Yes

In this program you examine the complex interaction of behaviours and conditions of living that impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, groups, and communities. These include the social, economic, cultural, organisational, and political conditions in which people live. The health promotion component covers needs assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.



Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science (Psychology and Exercise Science)

Program duration: 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time

Exercise scientists seek to enhance health and physical performance using activity analysis and specific performance objectives. The combination of psychology with exercise science enhances your skills and career options by providing an understanding of the non-physical factors that influence athletic performance.


Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Science

In this degree you can develop a wide skill base by combining complementary specialisations such as marketing and public health, management and sport and exercise science and more. This allows a business perspective to research or applied science ventures.


Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Science (Sport Management)

This new program has been created to meet the increasing demand for qualified sports managers in South East Queensland (ie graduates with a sound knowledge of business studies, but with a background in the sport and exercise sciences).


Bachelor of Education / Bachelor of Arts

Program duration: 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time

Earn two degrees in only four years to become an arts discipline teacher in middle (Years 89) and senior (Years 1012) school.

This program prepares you to practise as a secondary teacher in Queensland. The education component develops professional knowledge and practice through courses on campus and at a variety of school/education sites. The arts component develops a background in chosen disciplines to support curriculum and co-curriculum studies in secondary schools. You study two teaching areas from English, geography, history, maths, science, and studies of society and the environment. Classroom field experiences start in your second year of study.


Bachelor of Education / Bachelor of Business

Program duration: 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time

Obtain expertise in at least two teaching areas, to teach students in middle (Years 89) and senior (Years 1012) school.

This program prepares you to practise as a secondary teacher in Queensland. The education component develops professional knowledge and practice through courses on campus and at a variety of school/education sites. In the business component, you combine study in areas such as accounting education, business education, and information and communication technology education.



Bachelor of Education / Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Education / Bachelor of Science will provide you with the professional studies, knowledge and skills, along with discipline expertise in at least two teaching areas, to teach students in the middle and senior phases of learning.


Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Science (Honours) Deans Scholars Program

Program duration: 3 years full-time

Commence mid-year: No

This double degree is designed specifically for outstanding school leavers or students displaying excellent academic achievement in the Bachelor of Science.

In this program you complete the Bachelor of Science degree and additional honours year in three years of full-time study. You specialise in an area of interest, with studies tailored to individual needs by an academic mentor. Honours is a traditional route of entry into higher degrees by research. Disciplines include biomedical science, biotechnology, environmental science, environmental health, nutrition, health promotion, and sport and exercise science. There is a thesis component.
